The Magnificent French Vineyards and Vivid Countryside
We are staying in the Var, a prefecture next to the popular Cote d'Azur. It is renowned for its vineyards and rose wine, a kind of delicate beverage best served with pasta, cheese, and fish.
During harvest time in summer, the vineyards practically cover all the hills and thousands of hectares of plains to form a yummy picture, as bunches of plants heavy with juicy grapes greet you in the morning. Last month, our neighbors harvested a sole grapevine and they were able to get a little more than twenty kilos of grapes.
For making wine, the vital harvest is during very late summer because it is the period when vineyard owners get people to pick the crops. Habitually, the work takes six hours per day and a big lunch and dinner is added. The job does not pay very well but people go for the experience, to gather with other people, and to spend a good time.
The extensive harvest experience lasts anywhere from one to three weeks, determined by the amount of work to be done. Unfortunately, this year, several vineyards have been sold to make way for real estate groups since owners are losing money due to poor finances.
