Conceiving How Cannes Festival Became So Prominent
Cannes is considered as the king of film entertainment, because it attracts thousands of prominent actors, starlets and amateurs, and directors and film-makers from around the globe. Some people regard that next to Oscar's, the Palme d'Or, which is the Cannes prize, is the greatest motion picture award.
In the 1930's, French Minister of National Education Jean Zay, decided to form a worldwide cinematographic fest in Cannes, because the fascist administrations of Italy and Germany interfered in selecting the motion picture entries for the Mostra de Venise. Zay considered such move as a disgrace and a form of corruption in the motion picture industry. Cannes' premiere was set on September 1, 1939, however, the incident was suspended due to France and UK's combat against Germany. The entertainment's eminent kick off was moved to September 20 in the aged of Cannes casino.
Although the popular award-giving body faced many hardships and controversies like strikes and budgetary problems, Cannes has become a relevant showcase of European movies. It gained its reputation of selling motion pictures with artistic quality, giving long shots to different country's to show concept of their cinema, and fostering the idea that European film is art film.
